A bespectacled male alpha cautiously spoke, looking at Zhang Qiang’s expression: “We don’t know if Baldy and Green Hair are dead or alive right now, and there are five or six others whose status is also unknown. Chen Wan drove an RV out of the mall’s underground parking lot. We weren’t prepared in time, and a few of our brothers were hit and sent flying. We tried shooting at her, but her vehicle was strange. A whole magazine of bullets didn’t even scratch the tires. Baldy and the others were all hit by Chen Wan’s car. We had no choice; we ran out of bullets and had to come back for reinforcements.”
The veins on Zhang Qiang’s forehead bulged as he grabbed a cup from the table and hurled it at the bespectacled man. The man didn’t dare to dodge and took the hit directly, blood immediately streaming down from his head.
“Useless! So many of you went out and couldn’t even catch Chen Wan, and now you have the nerve to make excuses. Everyone, grab your gear and follow me out. I want to see just how invincible Chen Wan’s RV is.” Zhang Qiang picked up a rifle and was the first to head out the door.
But as soon as he stepped outside, he was taken aback by the scene before him. Hundreds of zombies were wandering not far from the white building they were in. They had clearly cleaned up the area before, and now there was no sign of the RV.
Zhang Qiang gritted his teeth and asked the person next to him, “Where are Chen Wan and Jiang Yanxin?” The person, drenched in cold sweat, stammered, “Chen Wan left a radio behind when she left. The loud music attracted a lot of zombies. They should have driven away by now.”
Zhang Qiang turned and punched the man, “Damn it, all of you are useless. From now on, everyone is to go out and find Chen Wan. No matter what, we have to kill her.”
“Yes, yes,” everyone responded in a flurry, some getting into cars, others on motorcycles, scouring the city for any trace of Chen Wan and her group.
Zhang Qiang and Sun Yuejie also got into a car, mobilizing their entire force this time.
Meanwhile, Chen Wan had just filled the water tank and was heading towards the gas station as directed by Jiang Yanxin. Ten minutes later, Chen Wan successfully drove the RV into the gas station, positioning it close to the fuel storage unit. The system began automatically siphoning gasoline.
It seemed the gas station had a substantial fuel reserve, but the ground was stained with dark red blood and zombie remains, indicating a fierce struggle had taken place.
Jiang Yanxin had calmed down a bit, holding her drowsy child who looked like she was about to fall asleep.
Seeing her daughter’s adorable face, Jiang Yanxin’s face finally showed a rare smile. She softly said to her child, “Yang Yang, if you’re sleepy, go ahead and sleep. Mommy is here, don’t be afraid.”
The child, with her eyes half-closed, mumbled, “Mommy, watch over me. If I make too much noise, wake me up.”
Jiang Yanxin felt a pang of sadness hearing her child’s soft voice. Once, when the child spoke a bit too loudly, Chen Wan had threatened to throw her out for causing trouble. Since then, the child had been terrified of being abandoned by Chen Wan and was always careful about her volume.
“Okay, Mommy knows. You can sleep now,” Jiang Yanxin gently reassured her.
With her mother’s assurance, the child finally closed her eyes, ready to sleep. She hadn’t slept well the previous night, worried that her mommy wouldn’t come back for her.
About ten minutes later, the RV’s fuel tank was full, and Chen Wan heard the system’s mechanical voice in her mind: “Host, an unidentified vehicle is approaching from behind, less than twenty meters away.”
Chen Wan could easily guess that Zhang Qiang and his men were catching up. But she wasn’t afraid. With 1400 liters of gasoline, she could easily outrun these scumbags. She immediately turned the RV and sped out of the gas station at an impossible speed.
Dong Zi and his men noticed Chen Wan’s RV and, while flooring the gas pedal, shouted, “Shoot! Aim for the tires and stop them first.”
“Got it, don’t worry, Brother Dong,” a man in a shirt said, raising his rifle and leaning out of the window, aiming at the RV’s tires.
Bullets kept firing with loud bangs, many missing their target, and some not hitting anything at all.
The others in Dong Zi’s car also leaned out, desperately shooting at the RV. But the RV was moving too fast, and within minutes, it had left their car far behind.
“This is crazy! How can an RV be faster than a lightweight car like this? We’re losing them!” Dong Zi angrily pounded the steering wheel.
Chen Wan could hear the bullets hitting the car, and even the recently asleep Yang Yang was startled awake. Frightened, she softly asked Jiang Yanxin, “Mom, are the bad guys chasing us?” Jiang Yanxin hugged Yang Yang tightly and comforted her, “Don’t be scared, we’re safe in the car.”
Despite her mother’s reassurance, Yang Yang couldn’t help but curl up into a small ball in her mother’s arms, still frightened by the gunfire.
Jiang Yanxin, knowing Yang Yang was scared, held her even tighter.
Meanwhile, Chen Wan’s mind was intermittently filled with the system’s mechanical voice: “Detected damage to the RV’s exterior, damage level 10%, tire damage level 15%. Please drive safely.”
Chen Wan knew that this level of damage was just a scratch for the RV. She hadn’t even floored the gas pedal yet, and the gunfire behind them was already fading. However, she remained vigilant, driving through the western ring road of Weibei City. But when she reached the highway entrance, she slammed on the brakes. The entrance was jam-packed with vehicles, all stuck together, and some zombies were fearlessly climbing onto the RV.
A particularly agile male zombie clung to the windshield. His face was already decayed, smearing black blood all over the glass. Seeing Chen Wan inside, the zombie went berserk, repeatedly banging its head against the windshield with a dull “thud, thud, thud.”
Yang Yang couldn’t help but look towards the front of the car, and just one glance at the male zombie made her cry. She didn’t dare to cry out loud, only sobbing softly in her mother’s arms, “Mom, the bad guys are here. What if they eat you?”
“They won’t, we’ll be fine,” Jiang Yanxin reassured her, though her hands were trembling. With zombies and vehicles blocking the way ahead and Zhang Qiang’s men possibly catching up from behind, Jiang Yanxin wasn’t sure if they could escape this time. Her comforting words were as much for herself as for Yang Yang.
Chen Wan, however, wasn’t too bothered by the zombie on the windshield, just finding it disgusting. She thought about washing the car once they got out of the encirclement. While thinking, she instructed Jiang Yanxin and Yang Yang in the back, preparing to floor the gas pedal and plow through the car cluster. The RV was powerful, with a load capacity and impact force far beyond ordinary vehicles, so breaking through the crowded cars shouldn’t be too difficult.
“Yanxin, hold Yang Yang tight. We need to get through this,” Chen Wan instructed.
Jiang Yanxin took a deep breath and held Yang Yang tightly, “Okay, you drive, I’ll take care of Yang Yang.”
With Jiang Yanxin’s response, Chen Wan didn’t hesitate. Without reversing to gain momentum, she floored the gas pedal right there. The RV accelerated instantly, crashing into the nearest cars. The small cars were quickly pushed aside, and Chen Wan’s RV forced a path through the car cluster, leaving the zombies on the windshield smashed and bloody.
Ten minutes later, Chen Wan successfully drove the RV out of the car cluster and onto the highway. She planned to find a place to rest and repair the RV’s exterior and tires, which had suffered some damage.
Worried about Zhang Qiang’s men catching up, Chen Wan drove for another forty minutes before exiting the highway. She then drove for another ten minutes on city roads, encountering dozens of zombies along the way, which she either ran over or avoided. Finally, she parked near a shopping mall on the outskirts of Weibei City. Zhang Qiang’s men, having established their own base, wouldn’t chase them this far. Only then did Chen Wan breathe a sigh of relief.
There were many cars around the mall. Chen Wan parked close to a small car, and the system’s mechanical voice sounded: “Vehicle exterior damage level 15%, tire damage level 18%. Besides one small car, the host needs to pay an additional 20 crystal cores for repairs. Execute?”
Chen Wan didn’t hesitate and quickly gave the system the command to execute.
To avoid attracting zombies, Chen Wan lowered the steel plates on the windshield, plunging the car into darkness. With a thought, the interior lights came on, and the ventilation system started, bringing in fresh air from outside without making it stuffy.
“System, can I use the RV’s facilities during repairs?” Now that they had stopped, Chen Wan noticed the strong smell on her body and couldn’t stand it anymore, so she quickly asked the system.
“The host can rest assured, during the vehicle repair process, aside from being unable to move, all other functions can be used as usual. The remaining repair time is one hour, please be patient.”
Chen Wan felt a bit more at ease and got up to walk towards Jiang Yanxin and the little one.
Jiang Yanxin held the little one tightly, unsure of what Chen Wan was going to do.
The little one also nestled fearfully in Jiang Yanxin’s arms, looking at Chen Wan with timid eyes, pursing their small lips without daring to speak.
Seeing Jiang Yanxin and the little one in her arms, Chen Wan couldn’t help but laugh. She chuckled and said, “Why are you looking at me like that? I’m not a bad person. We’ve already driven quite far, we should be in another county by now. Zhang Qiang and his men won’t find us so quickly, so there’s no need to be so tense. The RV is well-sealed and soundproof, so you don’t have to lower your voices. Would you like to take a look around the RV with me?” Chen Wan tried to smile kindly.
She knew Jiang Yanxin and the little one were still wary of her, so she tried her best to get along with them. After all, they were now in the same boat.
Jiang Yanxin nodded, “Alright, Yang Yang and I will take a look too.”
With that, she unbuckled the seat belts on herself and the little one, stood up holding the little one, and followed Chen Wan to inspect the RV.
The front driving cabin and the rear leisure area of the RV were connected. In the middle was a space resembling a small dining area. At a glance, the right side had two sets of sofa beds facing each other, with a foldable table in between. When the table was put away, the dining area turned into a small bedroom with two beds.
On the left side was a set of cabinets, a cooking stove, and even a sink for washing vegetables. Further inside, behind the sofa bed, was a bathroom with a toilet and a shower. It was spacious enough for one person to shower without feeling cramped. Opposite the bathroom were storage cabinets, and further inside were two bunk beds, with the lower bed being slightly larger, enough to sleep two people comfortably.
