Curfew had long since passed. Most homes in the small town were already dark, with only a few scattered lights still burning.
The innkeeper, lantern in hand, yawned. He had already checked the doors and windows and, convinced there would be no more guests tonight, was about to go back to his room to sleep.
But when he stepped into the courtyard, he noticed that one room still had its light on. He frowned, muttering under his breath:
“Two people only booked one room…”
“And they’re still wasting lamp oil this late…”
He bent his arm back to knock...
