Chen Wan didn’t hand over the crystal cores directly; instead, she took the initiative to eat three herself first.
With a playful glint in her eyes, she smiled at Jiang Yanxin and said, “They’re sweet and taste pretty good. Don’t worry, there’s no danger.”
After saying that, Chen Wan tossed the remaining seven crystal cores into her mouth all at once, savoring them with delight.
Jiang Yanxin looked at Chen Wan and noticed her bright eyes fixed on her, causing her ears to heat up inexplicably.
“So, was Chen Wan afraid to eat them herself and decided to demonstrate first?”
Jiang Yanxin thought to herself, but she reminded herself not to overthink it.
As for Chen Wan’s intentions, Jiang Yanxin couldn’t quite figure it out for now.
It seemed that Chen Wan was determined to take her along, and these things clearly posed no harm to the body.
Jiang Yanxin decided not to hesitate any longer.
She took the crystal cores from Chen Wan’s hand and began to eat them one by one.
She furrowed her brows slightly, but when she swallowed the first crystal core, a sweet, warm sensation flowed down her throat and spread throughout her body.
Her previously furrowed brows slowly relaxed, and she looked at Chen Wan in surprise, “It’s really sweet, and warm too.”
Chen Wan chuckled lightly, “Of course! Would I lie to you?”
Jiang Yanxin felt a stir in her heart at Chen Wan’s words.
They had only known each other for a few days since the chip change, but Chen Wan’s statement was indeed true.
Ever since they escaped from Zhang Qiang, every word Chen Wan had said to her had been genuine, and she had kept her promises.
Jiang Yanxin’s gaze toward Chen Wan turned inquisitive, but she tried to respond in her usual tone, “I know you haven’t lied to me; I just didn’t expect the stuff inside a zombie’s head to taste this good, and without any strange flavors.”
“They’ve been cleaned thoroughly, so eat with peace of mind.”
Chen Wan smiled and stood by, waiting for Jiang Yanxin.
After all, she had the system, and once she obtained the crystal cores, the system would naturally clean them before collecting them.
As Jiang Yanxin consumed ten zombie crystal cores, she felt a warm sensation enveloping her body.
If she were to describe the difference in her body compared to before, Jiang Yanxin couldn’t quite articulate it, but she felt her energy was somewhat more abundant than before.
She turned to Chen Wan in surprise and said, “It seems to be somewhat effective. I can’t say exactly how, but I feel much better than before.”
Chen Wan nodded and handed a narrow knife to Jiang Yanxin while taking a bone knife for herself.
“The more crystal cores you eat, the greater the effect. I’ll prepare ten for you every day from now on.”
Chen Wan spoke casually, but her words carried a different meaning in Jiang Yanxin’s ears.
Did that mean she wanted to be with her all the time in the future?
Seeing Jiang Yanxin silent, Chen Wan continued, “Once we enter the hospital, stick close to me. You won’t need to carry the hand luggage; these two big backpacks are enough to hold a lot of medicine. Otherwise, it will be hard to run later.”
“Okay, I’ve noted that down.”
Jiang Yanxin replied as she adjusted her backpack and followed Chen Wan off the vehicle.
Chen Wan lowered all the steel plates protecting the car windows, sealing the RV tightly.
She also turned on the lights for Yang Yang inside before leading Jiang Yanxin toward the county hospital’s entrance.
As they approached the hospital’s iron fence, they encountered two zombies head-on.
With her enhanced strength attribute, Chen Wan sliced through these first-level zombies as easily as cutting cucumbers.
In just two swift strikes, the zombies hadn’t even had a chance to lunge at them before their heads fell to the ground.
Jiang Yanxin had seen Chen Wan’s skills before, but she was still startled.
Just moments ago, when Chen Wan had her hair cut short, Jiang Yanxin felt that Chen Wan seemed much stronger than when she first met her.
She remembered their near-death experience in the mall corridor; back then, Chen Wan didn’t seem to have such strength.
However, Jiang Yanxin didn’t dare to dwell on it and quickly refocused, carefully following Chen Wan from behind.
Chen Wan and Jiang Yanxin hid to the side of the building, where the windows were open, but there were still quite a few zombies roaming in the lobby—at least twenty of them.
Chen Wan picked up a few stones from the ground and began to throw them at the high-voltage electrical box next to the hospital entrance.
The stones landed precisely on the metal door of the electrical box, creating a series of abrupt banging sounds.
The first-level zombies lacked intelligence and were easily fooled; the noise was enough to attract all the zombies in the lobby.
Those zombies surged toward the high-voltage electrical box as if they had found a target, while the remaining zombies in the corridor sensed the commotion and rushed toward the box as well.
A few minutes later, nearly all the zombies in the first-floor lobby had gathered around the high-voltage electrical box, leaving only a few straggling zombies in the corridor.
This was the moment Chen Wan had been waiting for.
She lifted her leg and placed it under the window, signaling for Jiang Yanxin to step on her knee and climb in first.
Jiang Yanxin hesitated for a moment, realizing there was no time to dwell on such matters.
If she didn’t listen to Chen Wan, it would only put Chen Wan in danger.
So, she stepped on Chen Wan’s right leg with her left foot, pushed herself up with her hands, climbed through the side window, and jumped into the hall on the first floor.
Seeing that Jiang Yanxin had successfully entered, Chen Wan placed her hands on the windowsill, exerted some force, and easily lifted her body to flip into the hall below.
The noise they made attracted the attention of the zombies that had just run out; many of them turned around, wanting to come this way.
However, a portion of them continued to rush toward the high-voltage electrical box, causing a bottleneck as the two groups of zombies clashed, which gave Jiang Yanxin and Chen Wan some time.
A few scattered zombies in the corridor slowly approached Chen Wan and Jiang Yanxin.
Chen Wan kicked out to the side, sending two zombies flying far away.
At the same time, her bone knife was busy as well, swiftly dispatching a zombie that came toward her, its head falling to the ground with a thud.
Another zombie approached Jiang Yanxin.
From its clothing, it looked like a female nurse who had previously worked here.
Now, that zombie was lunging at Jiang Yanxin with outstretched hands.
Having killed a zombie before, Jiang Yanxin had some experience.
She kicked the zombie head-on; although her strength was much less than Chen Wan’s, it still caused the female zombie to pause for a moment.
Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Yanxin swung her knife with all her might at the zombie’s head.
The female zombie’s head tilted to one side from the blow, dark red, foul-smelling blood splattering everywhere, staining Jiang Yanxin’s clothes.
However, the strike did not sever the zombie’s spine completely, and the female zombie lunged at Jiang Yanxin.
While Chen Wan easily decapitated two more zombies, she noticed Jiang Yanxin’s predicament.
She turned and pressed the back of her knife against the female zombie’s chest.
Instead of attacking, she instructed Jiang Yanxin, “Cut.”
Jiang Yanxin wasted no time.
Seeing that the female zombie was being held back by Chen Wan, she raised her narrow knife and struck at the zombie’s spine.
After two strikes, the female zombie fell to the ground.
At that moment, the zombies that Chen Wan had lured outside began to react and surged into the hall.
Although the low-level zombies moved slowly, the sight of so many of them coming in waves was still quite terrifying.
Chen Wan grabbed Jiang Yanxin’s wrist and dashed toward the second floor.
Along the way, she threw one zombie down the stairs and tossed another into a pile of zombies below, briefly slowing down their pursuit.
She pulled Jiang Yanxin to the door of the second-floor corridor, opened it inward, and they both hid behind the door.
Pressed closely together, Chen Wan had Jiang Yanxin lean against the wall behind her, protecting her in her embrace.
Just as they settled in, a horde of zombies rushed in from below.
These zombies, once stimulated or sensing a target, charged forward.
The building’s layout was a maze, allowing the zombies in the vertical corridor to quickly rush into the horizontal corridor on the other side.
Chen Wan’s attention was focused on the zombies in the corridor, and she didn’t realize how close she and Jiang Yanxin had become—so close that she could almost kiss her if she turned her head.
Jiang Yanxin noticed this too.
Outside, the sight of the horde of zombies was terrifying, but behind the door, she and Chen Wan were breathing in sync, and she could even feel Chen Wan’s warm breath against her.
Especially when Chen Wan turned to her, the distance between them was only three or four centimeters, allowing them to hear each other’s heartbeats clearly.
Their gazes briefly met, and Jiang Yanxin quickly averted her eyes from Chen Wan, but she could sense that Chen Wan was still looking at her.
For some reason, Jiang Yanxin felt her ears slightly flush.
She gently pushed Chen Wan and reminded her, “The zombies have all gone to the other corridor.”
