The manservants had tacitly begun treating Danse as their new master, and by extension they had become more courteous toward Lance.
A manservant explained,
“We didn’t want things to turn out this way either, but our master… no, Mr. Liander, that devil, can’t tolerate anyone coveting our mistress. If anyone so much as looks at her twice, he becomes suspicious. Mr. Liander normally seems mild-mannered, but once he grows jealous of someone, he can do truly ruthless things.”
Lance asked,
“Do you know what he would do? Did you experience it yourself, or see it with your own eyes?”
